Hannah Thorogood

Hannah first discovered Permaculture in New Zealand in 2002 and realised it fitted very closely with how she had been brought up on her family small holding in Bedfordshire. On her PDC held at Otamatea Eco Village in Northland NZ she heard more that made sense to her and that she valued, than in four years at University in Britain gaining her BSc Environmental Studies and MSc Organic Farming. Hannah worked on a number of Permaculture projects in New Zealand and went on to implement her first garden there. She assisted Joe Polaischer on a three month Permaculture teaching tour of Austria and stayed on to design and implement farms and gardens there.

Since returning to Britain Hannah has been establishing Permaculture links with her roots. Co-founder of HEAP – the East Anglian Permaculture group and ‘Raised Beds' the Bedfordshire Permaculture Group. Hannah is developing an urban Permaculture demonstration plot in Bedford. She is also restoring a 128 year old wooden yacht, The Ripple, with plans to become a Permaculture ‘lifeboat', a mobile permaculture teaching unit to shore based and island communities in a non oil based future. Hannah was the programme co-ordinator for the National Biennial Permaculture Convergence 2006 which was a great success and is one of the six members of the Permaculture Council for Europe. Hannah attended the Designed Visions Teaching & Facilitating Course in 2004 and has been teaching across the country since then. She attended the IPC7 in Croatia; two oil peak conferences and the Advanced Design Course, with David Holmgren, in Ireland in 2005; and visited Geoff Lawtons ‘Greening the Desert' work in Jordan. Hannah presented her Diploma Portfolio in September 2005 and joined Designed Visions in Spring 2006 after co-teaching several PDCs with Aranya. She led her own in Bedford in 2006 and had a busy 2007, teaching around the country. She is currently taking some time out nursing twins, born at the end of 2007.
